Airport Junction Shopping Centre

The Airport Junction Shopping Centre, known among locals as APJ, is one of the biggest and best malls in the city, with a whole range of shops and businesses from Spar to Woolworths, Edgars, bank branches, bookstores, and everything you can imagine. They even host the popular Virgin Active Health Club gym, the only Checkers supermarket in the city, and a number of food places and restaurants like Cappuccinos and Bukhara.

Explorer’s note:‍‍ ‍With roughly 46’000sqm of retail space the second biggest mall in the city after Game City (see next one), but makes the top with the most variety of stores and branches.

Game City Shopping Mall

The biggest mall in the city with almost 60’000sqm of retail space, and in every respect a giant in the city. Game City is located on the south end of the city right next to Kgale Hill and is most prominently home to the large South African retailer GAME. Given its size, there are obviously a number of stores and places at Game City, ranging from the two big supermarkets Choppies and Shoprite to multiple clothing stores and different fast food outlets like KFC, Nandos and the recently opened Veetros.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍Look beyond the mall itself and you’ll find the closeby smaller Kgale Mall with Spar and the loved Cafe Dijos and Peking Garden Restaurant, and there’s also a theme park for kids and Seats Steak House has recently re-opened behind the mall.

The Fields Mall

One of the newer malls in town and a beautiful one altogether is The Fields Mall in the Central Business District. Home to Spar and Pick n Pay, the Doppio Zero Restaurant, and – again – all stores and food parlours imaginable, it’s a pulling weight in the CBD attracting people well into the night, especially around its kids play area with restaurants around. It also has a padel and 5-a-side football pitch and the cool Skyview bar close by.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍While most shops and supermarkets in Gaborone close at around 6 or 7pm, Pick n Pay is always your safe bet to be open until 10pm on all days of the week, and across all its branches. Perfect for late night grocery or snack shopping.

Riverwalk Mall

Riverwalk is located in Village, on the edge of Gabs as you leave toward Tlokweng, and a lovely mall with stores and supermarkets, including Pick n Pay, Spar, Clicks, MrPrice, Home- and HiFi Corp, among others, and has a great restaurant corner with Bukhara, Dros, Downstairs, Mugg & Bean and a number of fast food outlets.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍The Mugg & Bean at Riverwalk is famous for having been the favorite spot of the now sitting president Duma Boko at one of its tables in the corner, where he apparently was a regular guest before his presidency. Ask the staff about it for a bit of story time :)

Railpark Mall

Back to the core of the city, Railpark mall is another giant and located next to the bus rank and across the rails from Station – all of which an area surprisingly lesser frequented by international visitors and moreso by local crowds. Its large supermarket branches are Choppies and Spar and there is also your regular range of stores and services like banks and pharmacies.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍The whole area around Railpark Mall is where the hustle and bustle of the city is going down, particularly at the bus rank and around Station Mall across, both linked by Railpark and filled with small vendors and markets stalls.

BBS Shopping Mall

BBS is another hustly centre with many stalls and vendors inbetween the open format of the mall, which is home to branches of Pep, CashCrusaders, Ackermans and other stores. BBS itself is a bank that has its head office towering over the mall, and neighbors Gaborone Private Hospital and the police station.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍BBS Mall is the heart of the Broadhurst/Tsholofelo areas and is, beyond being a mall, also a meeting place, a direction and the start or destination of a number of combi routes.

Fairgrounds Mall

Tucked between the Toyota Motor Centre and Cresta Lodge Gaborone, you’ll find the Fairground Mall with its shops and businesses. From Choppies to Chicken Licken to the fairly new Jetour Car Showroom, the mall is also home to law and consulting offices, a governmental transport office and the accelerator from Standard Bank.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍Check out the store of BK by Proctor, a local fashion brand with cool modern clothes and accessories.

Molapo Crossing Shopping Mall

The shopping mall at Molapo Crossing is the gate between Gaborone and Mogoditshane and is, beyond shopping, also a place of sports and nightlife. On the sports front, there is a large Jack’s Gym branch with a heated indoor pool, five-a-side football pitches and padel courts; and for the nightlife crowds they have the Cappello Lounge and La Parada Restaurant.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍At the Molapo Piazza, a big open space with a stage and screen in the middle of the mall, they occasionally host events or live viewings (great during AFCON and World Cup seasons)

Sarona City Mall

The Sarona City Mall is part of the larger Sarona City development with its residential developments called The Habitat and one of the most attractive and up-and-coming neighborhoods to live and shop in. At the simple but beautiful mall with Pick n Pay, Clicks, KFC, Chicken Licken, and other outlets, there are also popular chinese shops (The New World store), hair salons (including Kids Dreams Hair Salon for children), health facilities and the Italian Luna Rosa Restaurant.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍Sarona City is ever growing and developing, keep your eyes and ears open for the Omega Centre which is under construction, and the growth of The Habitat with opportunities to live and invest in.

Just around the corner from Airport Junction Mall, the Sebele Shopping Mall or Sebele Centre is home to a large Pick n Pay, a Mugg & Bean café, Woolworths, Clicks and many other shops (including the bike store Ultimate Cycle Base), and also has Asian restaurants and a Rhapsody’s there.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍In that Block 10 corner with the big Airport Junction Mall, this very Sebele Centre, Remmogo Crossing adjacent to APJ, the North Gate Mall across from Sebele, and even more up the road in Setlhoa, one will never be bored shopping on this side of town.

BONUS: Main Mall

Though not a mall in the traditional sense and more of a car-free shopping street, the Main Mall is the original "mall" in Gaborone and one of the main places to visit and stroll through in the city. With a number of established shops along the sides, Main Mall is famous for its market stalls, street food and souvenir shops on the street.

Explorer’s note:‍ ‍Fun Fact: Now known as the Main Mall, it was originally simply called 'The Mall' and made for the centre of Gaborone’s original post-independence development which has been growing around the central Government enclave and The Mall, making it the point from where the Extensions and Phases grew outward from.
